Micro Resistance Welding Techniques -- What Are The Advantages?

Welding is defined as a simple procedure of applying intense hear coupled with a chemical reaction on the material to join the material at the required point. Although it sounds very simple and straight forward, it has a lot of variations and new techniques. This field is constantly undergoing development. The most recent one to be added to that list is Micro Resistance welding.

The high heat required for the functioning of these welders needs to be generated from electricity and this electricity is provided by generators. There are three main components in a welder. They are an engine which functions on fuel, electric run motor and a mover. There is one problem with these welders. Current is of two types AC and DC. The welder needs to modify itself according to the current provided and this where the problem occur. Instead a fuel powered welder uses Kerosene, petrol or diesel in these fuel powered engines. This solved the problem caused by electric power supply. Recently a different technique of welding called micro resistance welding has been introduced. In this the result of the resistance welding process is coalescence at the weld joined formed by the metals. This is due to the heat generated as a result of resistance of the work to the flow of electric current. To prevent arcing a particular force is applied pre, post and during current application. In special cases such as attachment of wires or foils with thickness ranging from 0.0005" to 0.030” a modified and advanced version on micro resistance welding has been developed.

The advantage of using Micro resistance welding is  in three ways a ) The process of micro resistance welding is very inexpensive b) The process is considered very safe and there is no welding arcs and low voltages. C) The major issue of part fit is overcome in this procedure because of the proper contact established between the parts undergoing welding. This happens because of the force from the resistance offered to the welding. Stainless steel alloys, Hostelry alloys, Nichrome alloys, kovar, Nickel alloys, Inconel alloys, Precious metals and copper alloys can be welded using micro resistance welding.  One more unique capability of micro resistance welding is that materials as thin as 0.0005" can be easily welded using this technique.
